Fireweed Genus Details
This beautiful perennial herb is a member of the evening primrose family. It forms extensive colonies by growth from a thick rootstock. Stems are simple or branched and the leaves are spirally arranged around the stems. There are many longish purplish flowers, drooping in the bud. Fireweed reaches 4 to 8 feet high and is found in dry, disturbed areas. The roots and leaves of this herb are said to have astringent and tonic properties. When used in ointment, this herb has been used to treat infant skin infections. Most notably, this herb has been used in the treatment of whooping-cough.
